“We educate women because it is smart. We educate women because it changes the world.”

3rd January 2008. A girl is born in a family and the family rejoices and welcomes the little one. A child, God’s blessings. 4th January 2008. A boy is born in another family and the family finally feels accomplished that now it has an heir who will take the family name forward. At this point, no one knows whether he will be capable or not but he is already a designated heir.

It makes us think. Is there a difference between the two? Both are children of God. The sun shines the same for them, the earth rotates at the same speed for them. Then who has written these rules down and what is this discrimination about? While we live in a patriarchal society, it does not define and decide anyone's capability and potential. We see women shining in all areas of life. Kalpana Chawla going to Space, Indira Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister of India, Rani Jhansi fighting valiantly for India’s freedom, or P.V. Sindhu winning laurels for India through her badminton. You name it and women have done it.

Sports, Politics, Science, Space, Medicine, Education, Police, Army. Women shine everywhere. In all fields, in all countries, of all religions, women's strength is unprecedented. Then why do we shy away when a girl is born? Why do we think we need to get them married and dispense our duties, why should they not go to school, why would they not be invested in and given the best opportunities? The 21st century draws inspiration from a woman like Mary Kom. She possesses the determination of a mother and the resolve of a woman who has brought fame and respect for India. She reinforces how a woman has fragmented stereotypes.

We believe that the 2020s belong to girls and women. Women are indeed a blessing. It is time to welcome the girl child as their heir to success, happiness, and as the future leaders of a truly compassionate human race.
